Dr. Sandor Grosz
1910 29.4.1943
Dr. Sandor Grosz was born in Nyiracsad in 1910, the second of five children. His father was a wealthy landowner. He attended and graduated from Piarista High school in Debrecen. He received his law degree from the University of Debrecen.
Dr. Grosz opened a law office together with his brother-in-law, Samu Wollner, in Debrecen on Piacutca 73. Later they became partners with Dr. Laszlo Neuwirth. In 1940, Dr. Sandor Grosz served in the forced labor battalions. He was later taken to the Russian front. There, a sergeant from his hometown protected him. His brother-in-law, Samu Wollner, was injured and taken to the military hospital in Doroshits. The sergeant took my brother to visit his brother-in-law. The sergeant waited outside, but my brother never made it out of the hospital. The Hungarians burned down the hospital with everyone in it. They said that there was a typhus epidemic there.

Dr. Imre Gyorki
Mauthausen Concentration Camp Registration Card

Dr. Imre Hacker
Imre was born in Gyor, Hungary, in 1887 to Hacker Sandor and Karolin Unger. He had 11 brothers and sisters. He received his secondary education at the Benedictine Catholic Fathers high school (gymnasium) in Gyor.
He practiced general law in Gyor all his life, for a while in partnership with his lifelong friend Meixner Erno.
Imre was active both in city politics as a Councilor and in the affairs of the Jewish Community as vice president of the congregation. He was a good athlete and an excellent oarsman, a leading member of the local rowing club.
He was taken to Auschwitz together with all the Jews of Gyor in July of 1944, including two sisters who lived with him. Imre was transferred from Auschwitz to work in the steel mills at Bochum, Germany, under terrible conditions. In December of 1944 Bochum was carpet-bombed by the Allies and it is likely that he died at that time. I saw a copy of a letter from the SS commandant of the camp to his superiors (in the collection of John Csillag and part of the Gyor Jewish website) confirming that the camp crematorium was destroyed and asking for permission to bury the listed inmates in the local cemetery. My uncle's name and birth date appear on that list. The German caretaker of the cemetery buried the bodies individually and put up markers, a rare gesture of humanity in those times.

Dr. Miklos Halasz
Dr. Miklos Halasz was born on September 23, 1904 in Graz, Austria, to Alfred and Iren Hirsch. Dr. Halasz is listed as having died on March 15, 1943 on the Eastern Front as a Holocaust victim deported from Hungary as part of a Hungarian labor battalion.
Miklos Halasz was an attorney and landowner who spoke many languages. He inherited the land from his father who was an architect. Miklos married a Catholic woman, Elizabeth Tenke, and converted to the Hungarian Reform Church (Reformatus). He built a church on his estate in Felso Cikola, near Pusztaszabolcs. All of his land and buildings were taken from him and his family.
